Books
I read religiously, over 120 books last year. There are a ton of amazing books out there and I'd like to help people find the ones that I've found most beneficial. This is not your list of traditional self-help books, this is a list of books I consider to be life-changing.
-
Intimacy and Desire by David Schnarch - Addressing the concept of differentiation, a theory on how to develop emotional maturity, Schnarch brilliantly describes the necessity of taking accountability for oneself and shows how it's the only way to both heal yourself and help heal the relationships you care most about. Or you can check out my summary here.
-
Think Again by Adam Grant - A book replete with important psychological concepts, Adam West outlines how rethinking what we think we know leads to both personal and financial success. Or you can read my summary here.
-
Being Wrong by Kathryn Shultz - Kathryn explores the psychology behind being wrong and how we are wrong much more often than we realize, and that's okay! In fact, it's a good thing.
-
Daring Greatly by Brene Brown - Brene Brown takes the concept of vulnerability and shows you how it's essential if you desire to be happy. Check out my summary here.
-
The Anatomy of Peace by The Arbinger Institute - The book expertly describes how our own self betrayal leads to justification, judgmentality, and unhappiness. Check out my summary here.
-
Conversations with God by Neale Walsch - The most beautiful depiction of God I've ever read. Not only may it redefine your perspective of what God may be like, but it may also open your eyes to what unconditional love actually looks like.
Here are some other books that are on specific therapy theories and concepts that I highly recommend for anyone interested in healing themselves:
-
Intimacy and Desire by David Schnarch (Again) - Probably the best book I've ever read. Don't be turned off by the title, it's not just for couples (although it's great for couples), it describes a way of living that is foundational to healing. Or you can check out my summary here.
-
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy: A Therapist's Guide by Albert Ellis and Catharine MacLaren - Goes over belief systems and how to change your beliefs. This is crucial for healing in my opinion.
-
A Therapist's Guide to EMDR by Laurel Parnell - If you want to learn some resources for how to use EMDR on your own, this is a great place to start. You can check out my version of EMDR, RAT, here.
-
Internal Family Systems Therapy by Richard Schwartz and Martha Sweezy - IFS is a very effective form of therapy and it's easy to do. You can check out my summary of the book here.
-
The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk - One of the more famous books in psychology, he discusses how the body stores trauma and various methods to work through trauma.
-
Mental and Emotional Release by Matt James with Tris Thorp - A pretty simple yet effective method of healing. You can check out my summary here.
-
Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradberry and Jean Graves - Discusses the importance of emotions and your ability to identify and manage them. Or read my summary here.
-
The Marriage Clinic by John Gottman - Perhaps the leading researcher on couples therapy, John Gottman goes over specific steps to heal your relationship. His other book, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work is also worth reading. You can check out that summary here.
Podcasts/ Media
Podcasts
There are a lot of smart people who have dedicated their lives to the sharing of important and life-changing information. I will be creating a running list of those I find most impactful.
-
Philosophize This by Stephen West - Philosophy is all about the love of wisdom (literally what it means), the wisdom of challenging what we believe in order to find truth. Brilliant and funny, Stephen takes complex philosophical concepts and makes them easily digestible.
-
History of Philosophy Without Any Gaps by Peter Adamson - A more dry but also more comprehensive podcast on philosophy.
-
The Telepathy Tapes - If you want to challenge your paradigm about reality and spirituality, this is a great place to start.
I have an instagram for quotes that I think are meaningful that you can find here.
Videos
These are the most impactful videos I've found to date and any of them on their own may change the way you think about healing. All of these videos blew my mind despite considering myself pretty informed on healing. I highly recommend watching them all the way through, there were many times I was tempted to say "I've learned all I can from this" and turn them off, but they kept surprising me and I learned a lot as a result. The first video is by a professor at Yale University on how to statistically improve your happiness from between 5-15% which may not seem like much but it's changing from a 6/10 of how happy you are to 7.5/10, a difference worthy of effort in my opinion. The second video is on finding purpose and love which is far more insightful than it sounds. The third is on the neuroscience of how to change negative thoughts. All of them are informative and paradigm shifting videos.
Blog
In an effort to disseminate information that I find important I've started a blog. The blog contains many topics including healing techniques, psychological concepts, summaries of books so that you can read the most important concepts without having to spend hours reading, and existential writings as the topic greatly interests me. I recommend fully reading any book with concepts you find meaningful or interesting as some information is lost in translation.
I'll be coming out with a lot of new information so if you're interested you can subscribe below. Make sure to check and make sure that it doesn't go to spam!
