Radical Accountability Theory (RAT)
Radical Accountability Theory is a theory of my own creation and is the theory I've worked the most with in my healing career. I would say that it works for about 80-90% of people with the average person being able to work through an issue in 1-3 sessions, but the fastest I've seen is less than 5 minutes. This is my personal favorite because I've worked through over 100 of my own problematic beliefs with it and it has enormously benefitted my life, but it is typically less effective than IFS.

How It Works

RAT is a combination of three different ideas merged into one. Differentiation is a theory on how to develop emotional maturity and emphasizes the importance of taking accountability for one's emotional reactions and resolving them within oneself. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is a theory on how our belief systems create our reality and how we have the power to change our beliefs. Bilateral stimulation is a principle based on how the brain processes information which states that activating both hemispheres of the brain in an alternating and repetitive pattern facilitates mental and emotional processing, a process the brain automatically engages in during REM sleep. The combination of all three of these, that our emotional reactivity to anything is our responsibility to resolve, and we can do so by changing our belief systems with the aid of bilateral stimulation, is RAT in a nutshell. You can read a much more in depth explanation of this process and how to do it yourself in my blog post here.

In a session we would determine a problem that wants to be addressed and find its underlying problematic belief. Then, using bilateral stimulation, and choosing one of three different methods of how healing can occur, through the subconscious mind, the conscious mind, or the body, you would heal your negative belief, meaning that you no longer believe it's true. The second step is to replace your negative belief with a positive, more adaptive one, which is accomplished through the same process. When you believe something that is healthy and empowering as opposed to something fear-based, this process is complete.
